#980 Dead or Alive 2 (DC) Hidden Character: Bayman playthrough.
A playthrough of the exclusive hidden character Bayman in the Dreamcast port of Tecmo/Team Ninja’s Dead or Alive 2.
I stated last time that DOA2 was quite experimental. Few places is that more apparent than Team Ninja’s decision to drop Bayman from the game. Inspired by the Virtua Fighter series, DOA also takes that series’ conservative approach of only introducing around two new characters per game; in this case seeing the introduction of Ein (who I’ll get into in future videos), as well as Bayman’s de facto replacement Leon (who I’ll also get into in a future vid). Leon and Bayman are more or less just model-swaps here, with Bayman being mostly something of a bonus rather than a fully-fledged new character for the game.
Something I didn’t bother to mention last time is that DOA2 features a story mode. It’s rather basic, containing just a few cutscenes for each character and a rather basic ending, but it’s decent on the whole. However, given that Tengu and Bayman were made playable after the original release of the game, it means that they don’t have story modes of their own and can only be used in the time attack mode, which will become something of a staple for this series.
As I said, Bayman is pretty much just a bonus. I don’t think he even has any unlockable characters, most of his moveset is the exact same as Leon’s. It’s a pretty interesting moveset too; some in this series are rather speedy and quick with their strikes (such as those used by Hayabusa, Ayane and Kasumi) while others have slower but more powerful strikes and counter-attacks, while also usually having access to more advanced throws. Bayman here is perfectly competent, but when it comes to think series I usually prefer the speedy-comboers or the powerful strikers. Grapplers have never been a big thing for man, but Bayman here is pretty decent on the whole, and I’m glad that Team Ninja went through the effort of re-adding him to the game.
Next time, well, it’s time to see DOA2 in a whole different light.
